why cultural strategy?

The Nest is a cultural strategy project that uses design, events, and community programs to build cultural power with BIPOC and Queer creatives, entrepreneurs and social-impact businesses.

We are interested in how culture creates conditions for our collective liberation. Our decolonial definition of culture centers on the traditions, belief systems, and wisdom of marginalized communities. Cultural Strategy acknowledges the many ways Black, Indigenous, and People of Color contribute value and shape meaning for our world.

Our framework is built on three of
Sage Crump’s considerations for
cultural strategy:
social relations, economic systems, and imagination.

social relations

Our community is comprised of our intergenerational creative team, clients, public programming participants, community partners, and supporters. Our values of Connection, Care, Craft, and Collaboration ensure that we respect and value multiple ways of knowing and creating, and they ensure that we stay accountable to one another.

economic systems

Flight Lab, our reciprocal incubator for BIPOC, Queer and/or Trans small business owners, rejects scarcity and capitalism’s falsehood of individual exceptionalism. Through investing in each other’s success, we contribute to a culture of mutual economics.

imagination

The Nest nurtures radical possibilities. We use the diverse skills of our team to amplify our clients’ radical imagination, supporting them to build creative and connected ways to realize their wildest dreams.
