Collaging & Mood Boarding for a New Season

Ringing in the Fall Equinox with Creative Reflection

By Zakiya Johnson | September 21, 2024

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ― Maya Angelou

As we say goodbye to the scorching hot days, and the cozy embrace of fall settles in, there is no better way to celebrate changing seasons than by embracing a creative project! Our collage kit, incorporating themes of change and growth is here to support you in your fall reimaginings, and reflect on all the growth that has occurred!

Fall is the season of transformation. As the tree leaves change color and shed the old, so do we.  This collage kit is created to mirror the beauty of things coming to a close in order to make way for the new.

Our collage kit: Think oranges, browns, and any hues that remind you of change.

  • Download our collage kit HERE!

  • If you would like to create the collage digitally, simply download all of the individual graphics.

  • If you would like to create the collage manually, you can print the individual graphics or the larger graphic sheet, and cut out the images yourself.

What’s Inside the Kit?

What Else Will You Need?

  1. Natural Elements: If you’re creating a collage manually, go outdoors and collect some dried leaves, flowers, or any natural elements that you resonate with. If you’re creating it digitally, you can take photos of natural elements you want to include!

  2. Crafting Tools: We just used some elmer's glue and scissors to create our manual collage. And for a digital collage you can use a design tool like Canva or Photoshop, or something as simple as Google Slides.

How to Get Started?

Set the Scene: Find a cozy spot where you can spread out your materials.
Maybe light a candle or play your favorite playlist to get in the mood.

Choose Your Theme: Do you want a focal point for your collage? Is this a landscape, a self portrait, or an imagery based journal entry?

  1. Create a Background: Do you want to use one of the included graphics as your background? Is there a different image or photograph of your own that you’d like to use as the background? Or would you like something more subtle, like a textured background or solid color?

  2. Lay Out Your Design: Before you start gluing, I recommend arranging your cut out items on the page and see how they fit together. Play around with different compositions until you find one that feels right. It is all about the process!

  3. Assemble Your Collage: Once you are satisfied with your layout, start gluing and layering materials. Don’t be afraid to overlap elements, tear pages and incorporate other found objects.

  4. Add Final Touches: Incorporate any additional details, such as hand-drawn elements or small embellishments. Reflect on what makes fall special to you and let that guide your finishing touches.

Creating a collage can be more than a craft. This collage can be a way to metabolize all of the growth undergone in the previous summer months. This can also be an opportunity to welcome change and think more deeply on what needs to be shed in order to make room for your seeds to sprout. Explore various textures, colors and patterns while enjoying the process.

Why Collage?

the nest creatives is home to a strategy-led branding and design team.

Collages are basically a personal Mood Board

While we’ve just described the process for using the Fall Equinox Collage kit to create a digital or physical collage, you can also follow a similar process to construct a mood board for a creative project. To create a mood board for yourself or for a client, you’d likely start with the theme, and then follow the steps from there. When we create a mood board at Woven Studios, even though the mood board is just a step towards a final design project, we still think a lot about the composition of the elements on the page. What composition will convey the meaning we have in mind for the project? How can we create the cohesion, tension or juxtaposition that we plan to build into the final design? The mood boards become small works of art themselves! Check out some of our mood boards in our branding work samples, and you can see how the mood boards shaped the final designs! Once you’ve completed your fall collage, you can keep it close, share it with a friend, post it online, and tag us or send it to the nest’s instagram account
